Janet Evans is a true local. Born and raised in Gordonvale, she started swimming after breaking her arm high jumping at age 10. She had a successful swimming career, including many State Championships wins, National medals and records, Queensland team representation and making the 1976 Queensland Olympic Squad. After narrowly missing selection in the final Australian Olympic team, Janet finished competitive swimming to concentrate on teaching. Her love for swimming has not diminished and she is still as dedicated to the sport as she was then…perhaps more.
Janet started teaching swimming in 1976 and gained her Queensland Teacher of Swimming accreditation in 1977. Keeping up with all accreditation requirements over the years and more including Human Movement studies at UQ, Janet was a successful assistant coach at Saints Swimming Club in Cairns and Head Coach at Gordonvale for a total of 20 years and has been a swimming teacher now for almost 40 years.
All four of Janet’s children were competitive swimmers, with her eldest also winning Queensland State gold medals and holding Queensland records. They even held FNQ records at the same time! Janet’s youngest son, Queensland State of Origin star and Australian representative Nate Myles has often credited his early swimming background with his ability to achieve at the highest levels of his sport, and he still swims for fitness to this day.
She has had the advantage of knowing and learning from many of Australia’s greatest coaches including John Carew, Ken Wood, Laurie Lawrence, Bill Sweetnam, Phil McLeod, Peter Tibbs and her father Glen Evans. Janet has taken a break from coaching and has full focus on teaching swimming to all ages and all levels. Her principles are based on the sound knowledge of what it takes to become a good swimmer and how to achieve this goal by giving even her youngest pupils the best skills to enable them to go where they want to go.
